Nothing is too hard. It’s just too big. Cut it into pieces until one piece looks easy.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Overwhelm is usually a sizing problem rather than a difficulty problem. A task with no obvious first move reads as impossible, and your brain responds to the whole undefined mass of it rather than to any actual piece. Cut it up and the pieces are usually things you already know how to do, so the hardness was in the shape.

Take the thing you have been avoiding and write down the very first step, small enough to feel silly. Open the document, find the reading list, send the one message. Do that piece only, then look again, because the next piece is usually visible from there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Have you cut the overwhelming thing into pieces you can start?
