Taste feels like something you simply have, when most of it was assembled out of what was nearby: who you grew up around, what was playing, what a friend handed you at the right moment. Tracing it backwards is not about justifying anything. It shows you what you actually respond to, which makes it far easier to go and find more of it on purpose.

Pick one thing you love and follow the thread. Where did you first hear it, what else did that person make, who were they copying. An afternoon of that usually ends somewhere you would never have thought to search.
