Volunteering teaches something no class can: how to be genuinely useful to strangers.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being useful to someone you have no history with strips out the parts you usually rely on. No shared jokes, no knowing what they need before they say it, just showing up and paying attention to what is actually wanted rather than what you assumed. That is a real skill, and it is surprisingly hard the first few times.

Find something local that needs hands and give it a few hours. Go to learn rather than to rescue anyone, and take direction from the people who have been there longest. The point is being part of something that works, not doing anybody a favor.
