Every first day is awkward. The first day of your job, your team, your new school. Awkward is the price of starting.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Awkwardness is the cost of entry, not a sign you chose wrong. On a first day you have no routines, no in-jokes and nobody obvious to stand next to, and every one of those things only builds with time spent in the room. Everyone who looks comfortable there now paid the same fee, usually recently enough to still remember it.

Give anything new four appearances before you judge it. Learn two names on the first day and use them on the second. The discomfort drops off quickly once you stop being a stranger.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which awkward first day did you survive and then forget?
