A snake doesn’t apologize for the old skin. It just crawls out and keeps moving.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Shedding does not require a statement. An animal outgrows a layer, leaves it behind and carries on, with no explanation offered to anything that liked the old one. People find this much harder, because changing feels like admitting the previous version was wrong, so they stay in a skin that stopped fitting a year ago out of loyalty to who they were.

If you have grown out of something, a taste, a group, a way of speaking, you are allowed to simply stop without a farewell speech. No apology is owed to a former version of yourself. Let the change be boring and just keep walking.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which older version of yourself do you still apologize for?
