Everybody wants to be understood and nobody wants to be figured out.

Those two things sound similar and pull in opposite directions. Being understood means someone grasps what you meant and leaves you room to be more than that. Being figured out means someone has closed the file: they have a theory of you, and every new thing you do gets read as more evidence for it. One feels like company and the other feels like being watched.
Notice when you are doing the second one to somebody, especially a family member or an old friend you decided about years ago. Ask them something you think you already know the answer to. Then believe the answer they actually give you.
Who understands you without acting like they have you solved?
