Be as patient with yourself learning something new as you’d be with a ten-year-old learning it.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

The standard you hold yourself to while learning is often one you would find cruel applied to anyone else. A beginner making beginner mistakes is not a disappointment, it is the definition of a beginner, and you would say so to a kid without hesitating. Somewhere the same allowance stopped applying to you.

When you catch yourself narrating your own mistakes harshly, try saying it the way you would to someone younger. Not softer for the sake of it, just accurate: this is hard, you are new, that is what new looks like. Then go back and try again.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would you speak to a beginner the way you speak to yourself?
