Before you take advice, check whether that person has ever been where you’re trying to go.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice comes from wherever somebody is standing, not from where you are trying to get to. A person who never attempted the thing will explain exactly why it is risky, and they will sound reasonable, because caution always does. Confidence is not experience. People who love you can still be badly wrong about a road they have never walked down.

Before taking a strong opinion seriously, ask quietly whether this person has done anything like what you are attempting. If yes, listen hard, especially to the parts you dislike. If no, treat it as concern rather than instruction and go find somebody who has been there.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose advice are you following though they never walked that road?
