Detail is something you give, not something anyone is entitled to take. Explain everything to everyone and you hand full context to people who only asked to be polite, and then their opinions come back attached to information they never needed. A short answer is not dishonest. It is the right size for that particular relationship.

Build yourself a two sentence version of whatever is going on and make that the default. It works at work, at family dinners, with people you see twice a year. Keep the long version for the two or three who would sit with the whole thing and not repeat it.
