The rules you made at thirteen don’t have to run your life at twenty.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

A lot of the rules you run on were written by a much younger version of you, usually right after something went badly. Do not raise your hand, never go first, do not let anyone see you care. They made sense then, and they kept running long after the situation they were built for disappeared.

Pick one and test whether it still holds. Go first at something small, say out loud that you like the thing you like, ask the question in class. Retiring a rule that once protected you is allowed. The kid who wrote it did a good job and is not in charge now.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Which rule from your younger self still quietly governs you?
