Your friends’ expectations can become a uniform. Check if it still fits or if you’re just used to wearing it.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Groups assign roles early, usually before anyone knows each other well, and the role then keeps getting reinforced because it is convenient for everybody. You become the reliable one, the reckless one, the one who never studies, and after two years the label is doing your choosing. The fit rarely gets questioned, since wearing it is comfortable and changing it requires explaining. Comfortable and accurate are not the same thing.

Name your role in your main group. Ask whether you would pick it today if you were joining fresh. Then do one thing slightly outside it and see how little anyone minds.
