Know what you’d defend if it cost you something. That short list is your backbone.
STILLNESS
STILLNESS
Values are cheap to state and expensive to keep, and the difference only becomes visible when keeping one costs you a friendship, a spot on a team, or a comfortable evening. Anything you would drop under that pressure was a preference. What remains is the real list, usually shorter than people expect, which is not a problem. A short list you actually hold beats a long one you announce.
Write down what you would keep even if it cost you something real. Two or three items is plenty. Knowing them in advance is what makes the decision possible in the moment.
