The first wave gets the hype. The second wave gets the lessons for free. Being second can be a strategy.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Whoever goes first pays for the experiment. They find the dead ends, the bad assumptions and the parts that do not work, in public, and everybody watching gets that knowledge without the cost. Attention goes to the pioneer, but the advantage often goes to whoever was patient and paying attention.

You do not have to be early to everything. When a new thing arrives, let a few people run into the walls first and watch carefully where they struggle. Then start with their mistakes already removed from your plan, which is a genuine head start rather than a consolation prize.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where could going second give you lessons others already paid for?
