Quitting isn’t always losing. Staying in the wrong game too long is.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Persistence is only a virtue when it is pointed at the right thing. Staying somewhere that is clearly not working costs years, and the cost is invisible because nothing dramatic happens, it just quietly does not get better. Leaving looks like failure for a while. Staying can look like loyalty for a decade while taking much more.

Ask whether you are still here because it is working or because leaving would be awkward to explain. If it is the second, that is worth taking seriously, and it is not a verdict on you. Give it one honest deadline, and if nothing has changed by then, let yourself go.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Are you staying in something mostly because quitting feels like losing?
