Some effort pays out to somebody you will never meet, and there is nothing in it for you except knowing. That takes getting used to, since almost all work arrives with a reward attached to your name. Doing something purely because a stranger later benefits is a quieter kind of decision than it first looks.

Find your own version: notes left for next year’s class, a tradition started, something fixed at a job you are leaving. Do one of them without mentioning it to anyone. You will not get to see how it turns out, and that is the arrangement.
