A great life isn’t one without endings. It’s one where most endings were worth the tears.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Trying to build a life with no painful endings mostly produces a life with very little in it, because the only reliable way to skip the goodbye is to stay out of the thing entirely. How much a loss hurts is a measurement of what it was worth. That does not make it hurt less, and it does change what the hurt means.

When something ends badly this year, let it be sad without concluding it was a mistake to begin. Then keep taking things on anyway. Nothing worth having arrives with the ending detached.
