The transfer happens by absorption, years before any paperwork. How your house reacts to bad news, to money getting tight, to a stranger at the door, that is what gets handed over, and you are running most of it before you ever examine it. Some of it is a gift. Some is a reflex that made sense in somebody else’s life and not in yours. Unlike a will, this one you are allowed to edit.
