The name on the building belongs to whoever paid. The building belongs to whoever built it.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two kinds of owning exist and only one of them gets engraved. Whoever paid gets the sign, while whoever cut the stone knows exactly which corner gave them trouble and can point at it thirty years later from across the street. The second kind cannot be bought or transferred. It belongs to the hands that did the work, permanently.

Notice what you already own in that sense: something you built, a routine at a job you actually run, a piece of a project nobody else understands. Then keep doing work you could point at later, even when the sign carries somebody else’s name.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Where did you do the work while someone else got credit?
