Knowing your friend’s snack order is small. It’s also how people feel known.

Feeling known gets assembled out of small specifics rather than big declarations. Nobody walks away moved by being told they matter, they walk away moved because you remembered they hate cilantro, or that their interview was on Tuesday. Details are proof of attention, and attention is the thing people are genuinely short of. The size of the detail has nothing to do with the size of the effect.
Remember one small thing about somebody this week and use it without pointing at it. Bring the right drink, ask how Tuesday went. Do not announce that you remembered, because the effect depends on it seeming normal.
What tiny detail do you remember about a friend without trying?
