People trust you based on what you do when you think nobody’s keeping track.

People work out who you are from the moments there was no reason to bother. Handing back the extra change, doing the part of the job nobody checks, telling the truth when a lie would never have surfaced. Those register more than you would expect, because they are unusual, and one of them gets mentioned in a room you are not standing in. Behavior that only appears under observation is a performance, and people feel the difference.

Take the thing you would skip if you knew nobody was checking, and do it properly this week. Not for credit. Do it so you are not maintaining two versions of yourself.
