Watching someone get picked on and saying nothing still sends a message. It just sends the wrong one.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Standing there quietly feels like staying out of it, but the room does not read it that way. The person being targeted counts who was present, and the person doing it reads silence as permission to keep going. Neutral is not really on the menu in that moment. That is uncomfortable to know, and it is also useful.

Speaking up does not have to mean confronting anyone in front of a crowd. Changing the subject, standing next to the person, or finding them later and saying you saw it all count. If it is bigger than you can handle, telling an adult is the right size of response.
