When a younger kid corrects you and they’re right, say “you’re right.” That’s how you teach them honesty works.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Being corrected by someone younger pokes at status, which is why the reflex is to smooth it over or change the subject. They are watching closely though, and what they learn is whether being right is enough or whether you also have to be older. Two plain words settle it. After that, they know they can speak up, and so does everyone else who saw.

The next time a younger sibling or a junior teammate catches something, say so out loud, in front of whoever is there. Do not soften it with a joke or a but. Then use their correction, because using it is the part they will remember.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Could you tell a younger kid they were right today?
