Half of most arguments is the tone, not the words. Listen to how you sound.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two people can agree on the facts and still fight for an hour, because the disagreement moved somewhere words are not. Volume, speed, the particular flatness you get when you are done being patient: all of it is being read, and it is being read more closely than your point. Most people cannot hear their own tone in the moment, which is when it does the most damage.

When a conversation heats up, put half your attention on how you sound. Slower and quieter is usually enough to change the room. If you cannot manage that, say you want to finish this later and mean the later part.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Would your tone survive being played back to you later?
