Records get broken, usually by someone who watched you set them. That’s not losing. That’s legacy.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

A standard exists to be surpassed, and whoever surpasses it usually needed to see it done first. Being beaten by someone who grew up watching you is not the failure of your achievement but the completed version of it. The number was always going to fall. What matters is whether you raised the level while you held it.

When it happens, say something generous and mean it. Then find the part of your contribution nobody can take: what you taught, who you brought along, how you behaved. Records get replaced and that does not.
