A quiet life with a small garden and a steady job isn’t a failed ambition. It’s a finished one.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Wanting an ordinary life is a choice rather than a shortfall, though it rarely gets described that way. Scale gets treated as the only measure, so anything modest is read as having fallen short of a larger version it was never aiming at. Arriving somewhere you actually wanted to be is a completed ambition.

Get honest about which version you want, separately from which one sounds impressive. Ask what an ordinary week would hold if you designed it. If the answer is quiet, build toward that deliberately, because a chosen small life is nothing like a drifted one.
