The person handing out advice goes home to their own life. You’re the one who has to live in yours.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice always comes from inside someone else’s circumstances, priorities and tolerance for risk, none of which are on display when they give it. They will also not be present for the consequences, which changes what feels reasonable to recommend. Good advice is still worth having; it just needs translating before it can be used.

Take what you are told and ask what it assumes about your situation. Keep the part that survives the translation and set the rest down without argument.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

Whose advice are you following into a life they will never live?
