Be careful taking advice from people who’ve never tried the thing they’re telling you how to do.

Advice is cheap in proportion to the distance between the adviser and the risk. Someone who never attempted the thing has no sense of which difficulties are real, so their confidence is unearned and often loud. This is not about credentials, since plenty of quiet people know a great deal. It is about whether they have paid anything for what they are telling you.
Before taking a recommendation seriously, ask what they tried and what it cost them. Listen hardest to the people whose answer includes a failure. Treat the rest as opinion, which is fine once you have priced it correctly.
Whose advice have you followed without checking their record?
