“Fine” and “mad” can’t cover everything. Learn words like “overwhelmed” or “left out” so people know how to actually help.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Two settings cannot describe a whole inner life, and other people can only respond to what they are told. Saying mad when you mean left out sends someone off to fix the wrong thing, and most give up after a couple of misses. Precision here is practical rather than poetic. The right word tells a person what would actually help.

Build up a handful of specific ones: overwhelmed, left out, embarrassed, worn down, disappointed. Next time someone asks, reach past the default and use one. Then say what you want, since even the accurate word does not include the request.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What were you actually feeling the last time you said fine?
