Trace your heroes until your hand gets bored. Then draw what they never thought to draw.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Imitation is how the hand learns what the eye already admires. Copying closely teaches you decisions you cannot see from a distance: where the line thickens, what got left out, how the weight is distributed. Boredom arrives when your hand has absorbed the lesson and starts wanting something the original never tried.

Copy deliberately and for longer than feels respectable, without worrying about originality yet. Then, when the restlessness comes, follow it. The first thing you make that departs from the model will use everything the copying taught you.
