The stuff that got you called weird in middle school is probably your best material.

Being unusual in a place that rewards sameness is a bad position socially and a good position creatively. The specific interests you were teased for are, by definition, the ones you did not adopt from the people around you. That makes them yours in a way almost nothing else is.

Go back to whatever you buried and look at it without the old embarrassment attached. Ask what you actually liked about it. The material you were once told was too much is usually the material that nobody else can produce.
