Ideas don’t show up to empty studios. They show up to people already halfway through something.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Inspiration behaves less like a visitor and more like a byproduct. It arrives during the work, prompted by a problem you are already inside, which is why sitting and waiting for it produces nothing while working badly produces something to fix. The state you need is occupied rather than receptive.

Start before you have an idea and let the idea be a consequence. Open the file, make the first bad version, and keep moving for twenty minutes. What you are doing is not producing the work so much as creating the conditions it shows up for.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What could you start so ideas have somewhere to land?
