Neighbouring fields have usually solved a version of your problem in a vocabulary you have never heard. Their constraints differ enough that they arrived somewhere you would not have, and stay near enough that the solution transfers. The value is in that small distance. Too far and nothing carries, too close and you learn nothing.

Pick one discipline next door to yours and spend a month as an amateur in it. You are not trying to become good at it. You are trying to bring one idea home.
