A tutorial can teach you how to draw eyes. It can’t tell you what they should be looking at.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Instruction covers the parts that break into steps, which is most of technique and none of intention. That is why you can accumulate a great deal of skill and still not know what to make, since nobody teaches that and nobody can. The question of what the work is for stays yours whether or not you answer it.

Spend some of your practice time on deciding rather than executing. Make one small thing where the technique is easy and the only hard part is choosing what it is about.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What do you want your work to be looking at?
