Following along produces the feeling of understanding without the struggle that creates it. Every decision has already been made for you, so nothing gets stored, and the next time you face a blank page none of it is available. Building something badly forces the decisions to be yours, which is uncomfortable and is the actual mechanism.

Pick something small you want to exist and make it without a guide. Get stuck, look up only the specific thing blocking you, then continue. What you produce will be worse than the tutorial version and worth more.
