Crying out to God isn’t a lack of faith. Half the psalms are someone yelling honestly.

Honesty in prayer gets mistaken for weakness of belief, usually by people in the middle of something hard enough to make them honest. The older prayers are full of complaint, confusion and open anger, which suggests the tradition never expected composure as a condition of speaking. Silence is often the thing that signals distance, not volume.

Say the ungrateful sentence out loud in prayer this week, the one you have been editing. Put the fear in plain words rather than in acceptable ones. Nothing has to be resolved in the same conversation for it to count.
