A dog on a walk isn’t thinking about tomorrow’s walk. Borrow that for twenty minutes.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Animals do not spend the walk thinking about the next walk. There is only this hedge, this smell, this bit of pavement, which makes a dog on a lead a fairly good picture of full attention. Most of your walking gets done while you are somewhere else entirely, planning or replaying. The borrowing is temporary and deliberate rather than a way of life.

Take twenty minutes this week and put the future down for the length of them. No headphones, no planning, no mentally drafting messages. Look at what is actually in front of you, and when your mind runs ahead, bring it back to the pavement and carry on.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What would twenty minutes of no plans feel like to you?
