Some people show up an hour early to set up chairs nobody will thank them for. Notice them. Better, become them.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

There is a layer of work underneath most events that only shows up when nobody does it. Chairs, sign-in sheets, the coffee, the room unlocked. The people doing it are usually not in the photographs, and they have made a quiet peace with that. Recognition and contribution are not the same currency, and confusing the two is how people stop helping.

Two things follow. Find whoever set up the thing you walked into this week and thank them by name. Then take one unglamorous job nobody volunteered for and do it without mentioning that you did.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH
