Go through old photos from five years ago. You’ll see a lot of stuff you had and never noticed having.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Photographs are accidental inventories. You were pointing the camera at a birthday and it also caught the kitchen, the friend who later moved away, the shirt you wore constantly, the way your face looked before it changed. None of that registered at the time because it was simply the furniture of your life. Having something without noticing it is nearly the same as not having it.

Open a folder from five years back and look past whatever you were photographing. Then look around the room you are in now and try to guess what the background will turn out to have been.
