Your grandpa’s “measure twice” advice sounded boring until you cut the board wrong. Hand-me-down wisdom ages well.

GRATITUDE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Advice from someone older sounds like a platitude right up until it costs you something. The rule is compressed experience, and the compression is why it sounds obvious: every ruined board that produced it has been removed from the sentence. You cannot feel the weight of it until you supply a ruined board of your own.

When an older person tells you something plain, try asking what happened that made them start saying it. The story behind the rule is usually the part that sticks. And with the ones you have already ignored, at least notice when the board comes up short.
