A dog is indifferent to the route and entirely interested in the fact that you came. That is a fairly pure version of what company means: not the quality of the plan, just the presence of the person. People want the same thing and are far worse at saying so, which is why so much effort goes into arranging the plan instead of arranging the attention.

Take the walk without the phone once this week. Follow whatever it wants to investigate, go slower than you meant to, and let the whole point be that you are both out there.
