A value only proves itself at the moment it becomes expensive. Before that it is a preference you have never had to test, and preferences are easy to hold. What separates the two is whether you keep it when keeping it takes something away from you. That is the point where the word starts meaning anything.

Take one thing you say you believe and ask what it has cost you lately. If the answer is nothing, look for the situation where it would. You do not need to go hunting for hardship, only to stop dodging the small prices.
