A gift with terms attached is a transaction dressed as generosity, and the discomfort you feel receiving one is accurate. The conditions often go unstated, which makes them harder to refuse and easier to be held to later. Giving freely means letting go of what happens next. Anything short of that is a deal.

Before giving something, settle that you are giving it fully, including the part where it gets used in a way you would not choose. If you cannot manage that, say the expectation out loud. Naming the terms is more honest than letting them surface afterward.
