Being the one who says “nah, I’m out” usually saves more than just you.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

Groups drift toward bad decisions because each person is waiting to see whether anybody objects. Being the first to opt out breaks the appearance of unanimity and hands everyone else a way to do the same. Often several people were relieved. You rarely find out, because nobody says so afterward.

Say so plainly as soon as something is heading somewhere you do not want to go, and skip the justification. Do not try to argue anyone else out of it. Just leave the exit visible for whoever else wanted it.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

When did your walking away let someone else leave too?
