Two different things get counted as connection, and only one of them turns up when something heavy needs lifting. An audience responds to what you produce; a friendship responds to you, at inconvenient hours, without being entertained first. Numbers are easy to grow and easy to mistake for the other thing, particularly during a stretch when the other thing is thin.

Pick three people and do something for them that takes real time and has no audience. Ask directly for help when you need it, which is the harder half. Closeness is built almost entirely from small inconveniences absorbed in both directions.
