Someday a kid you coached will pass your advice to a stranger you’ll never meet. Say things that deserve the trip.

REFLECTION

WHAT THIS MEANS

What you say to someone younger does not stop with them. Lines get carried into rooms you will never enter, usually stripped of context and delivered with your certainty still attached, which is a strange amount of reach for a remark made in passing. That alone makes the offhand ones worth more care than they usually get.

Before giving advice, check whether it is a rule or simply the thing that worked for you, and say which. Then say the encouraging sentence you would want repeated. That is the one most likely to make the trip.
