Skill is the first persuasive speech. Once they’ve seen you nail the task, your opinions start carrying weight.

LEADERSHIP

WHAT THIS MEANS

People decide how much weight to give your words by watching what you can do, particularly before they know you. Competence acts as evidence that your judgment has been tested somewhere, and that credit transfers to opinions well outside the thing you demonstrated. It is not entirely logical. It is reliable.

If you want more say in something, get noticeably good at one visible part of it first. Do that part in front of people rather than describing it to them. The arguing gets much easier afterwards, and much shorter.
