You can’t guide a team’s focus if your own attention belongs to whatever just buzzed.

STILLNESS

WHAT THIS MEANS

Attention is contagious in both directions. A group takes its concentration from whoever is supposed to be steering, and if that person is half elsewhere, everyone quietly concludes that this is not a moment that requires them fully. Nothing you say about focus outweighs what your hands are doing.

For the next meeting or practice, put the phone somewhere it cannot reach you and say nothing about having done it. Look at whoever is speaking until they finish. The difference in the room usually arrives faster than you expect.
