Titles are costumes. People can tell when there’s nobody inside.
REFLECTION
REFLECTION
A role gives you the outward signs of standing and none of the substance. People work out fairly quickly whether the person in the position can actually do the thing, and after that the title only affects the paperwork. It is uncomfortable to hold authority you have not earned, mostly because everyone around you already knows.
If you have the position, spend your first months becoming genuinely good at the underlying work rather than performing the role. Ask questions that reveal what you do not know. Nobody minds a new person learning; they mind a new person pretending.
Which role are you wearing without having grown into it?
Free, with nothing to buy inside it.
