When your team is grieving, leading means slowing the schedule, not speeding it. Grief doesn’t run on a practice clock.

RESILIENCE

WHAT THIS MEANS

Grief does not respond to structure the way ordinary difficulty does. The instinct to keep everyone busy comes from wanting to help, and it usually serves the person organizing more than the people carrying the loss. What is needed is room: fewer demands, longer pauses, no expectation that anyone is back to normal on a particular day.

Cancel something rather than adding something. Ask each person what would actually help and accept the answer, including when it is nothing. Then check again in a few weeks, when everyone else has stopped asking and the hardest part often begins.
