Four-year-olds ask why about everything. Somewhere along the way we got embarrassed. Get un-embarrassed.

CREATIVITY

WHAT THIS MEANS

Small children ask constantly because nothing has yet taught them that not knowing is shameful. School and social life gradually attach a cost to the question, and most people respond by asking silently or not at all. The curiosity does not disappear, it goes underground, where it cannot get answered.

Practise asking in low-stakes places first, where nobody is keeping score. Ask the barista how the machine works, ask a friend what their job actually involves. The embarrassment fades with repetition, and what comes back is the thing you gave up around age seven.

A QUESTION TO SIT WITH

What question do you swallow because asking it feels childish?
